On June 7, an opening ceremony and potluck dinner marked the beginning of another summer of humanitarian work in the deserts of southern Arizona. Newly trained volunteers joined with seasoned No More Deaths coordinators and trail walkers to put out water and look for people in distress.
Volunteers came from near and far, including students from Duke University and youth from the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson.
Water, food and first aid are offered to migrants encountered in the desert. Water is also placed out in strategic locations where volunteers routinely note how much is used and clean up any empty bottles.
To volunteer with No More Deaths, please visit the Summer 2009 Volunteer Campaign page for more information. Volunteers can spend time either at the desert aid camp, or at one of three border aid stations in northern Mexico. |
