Summer 2011 International Humanitarian Aid is Never a Crime Campaign
TUCSON (May 2011) -- This summer two No More Deaths volunteers will travel to Gaza, part of an international “Humanitarian Aid is Never a Crime” campaign to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
Gabriel Schivone, a Chicano-Jewish American from Tucson; and a Palestinian American -- who wishes to remain anonymous -- will be making the trip. They do so at great risk, because last year Israel’s attack on the first “Gaza Freedom Flotilla” left 9 civilians dead, dozens injured, and 10,000 tons of humanitarian aid seized. Schivone will be on the flotilla, attempting to enter Gaza through the Mediterranean Sea; our other volunteer will attempt to enter Gaza through the Rafah border crossing controlled by Egypt. No More Deaths supports these volunteers in their service throughout the borderlands of Israel, Egypt, and Gaza to end death and suffering and uphold human rights standards.
As part of our commitment to Global Movement Building and "Humanitarian Aid is Never a Crime"campaigns over the years, No More Deaths has encouraged and supported our volunteers who serve with other humanitarian organizations across the world. Recently, NMD has supported volunteers who've traveled to Germany and Malta with the Sanctuary Movement in Europe struggling to end the militarization of EU borders and stop the deaths of refugees in the Mediterranean. NMD lent its support to the crew of a ship criminalized by the Italian government for rescuing refugees from death in the sea. NMD also supported volunteers who delivered humanitarian aid in Oaxaca and Southern Mexico to people in areas besieged by paramilitary groups.
