WE MADE A LOT OF NOISE THIS WEEK IN DEFENSE OF OUR COMMUNITY—AND THEY HEARD US! On Monday we sent out an alert requesting urgent action to stop the deportation of community member Alfonso Morales, a 20-year resident of Tucson and father of two citizen children who was scheduled to be deported on September 27. Together, we started putting pressure on U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director John Morton. In just three days of spreading the word, we sent a total of 1,866 faxes, collected 671 petition signatures, and made hundreds of phone calls in support of the Morales family’s fight to stay together. On Wednesday evening, Alfonso received news that ICE agreed to grant him “deferred action” on his deportation—that means he is staying with his family!—along with a one-year work visa, which is renewable. He will now be able to attend his daughter Ana’s graduation from Sunnyside High School this spring. No More Deaths and the Morales family want to thank everyone who did their part to make this happen! The Morales family has fought hard and won what all families deserve: the right to family unity. Every day in Nogales, Mexico, and on the migrant trails of the Arizona desert, No More Deaths volunteers meet parents who have already been separated from their children. While we celebrate the victory of the Morales family, we remain committed to changing our country’s immigration and economic policies, so that no child grows up in the U.S. with the fear their parents will be taken from them because of their immigration status. |
